Design & Make a Modern Quilt
with Charlotte Newland
Thursday September 21st to Thursday September 28th 2017 - FULL
ALL SHARP SEWING EQUIPMENT & SEWING MACHINES PROVIDED.
During this week’s course we are going to be tackling designing and making our own quilt whilst learning a whole host of different techniques as the week progresses. Charlotte will guide you through the design process and teach each individual the techniques required to complete their quilt. You can also watch and learn different techniques being taught to your classmates for future reference when you get home.
The course is suitable for all levels of quilter from complete beginners through to confident quilters.
As with the course we just completed, we will keep the programme very flexible so everyone has the option to adapt, amend and redesign some or all of the projects or to create and work on extra projects alongside the main quilt. The idea of the week is to sew, chat, have fun, learn new techniques and come away with one or more beautiful projects.
Day 1 Arrive today. Meet and greet supper with wine to get your creative juices flowing! Charlotte will display her sample quilts and discuss how she made them.
Day 2 Designing your quilt or if you have thought about it before you come, refining it and starting work.
Day 3 Working on your quilt individually with Charlotte giving lessons on different techniques as the day progresses.
Day 4 is an outing day to the local Vide Greniers and Brocantes.
Bring your cameras with you today and take photos for inspiration for quilt block designs. In the evening we can all sit and sketch out designs on graph paper and have fun designing our own quilt blocks. A propelling pencil with an eraser on the end is perfect for this. The studio will be open after we return if you wish to continue working.
Day 5 Charlotte will continue to guide you through making your quilt.
Day 6 is an outing day to the Tapestry Museum at Aubusson.
Take inspiration from the tapestries to come up with simple quilt and block designs and colour schemes.
Day 7 In the workshop today we will learn how to baste, quilt, trim and bind our quilts. Finally we will go outside at the end of the day for a fun photography session photographing our projects around the grounds. No special cameras are needed – a camera phone is fine for this!
Day 8 Today we will say our goodbyes and 'tie up any loose ends'. Most flights are later in the afternoon so the studio will be open for you to use all morning followed by lunch before you leave.
