Louise
Nichols

A brief biography

Louise is a textile artist who has been working in the design/textile world

since graduating in 1992 with a B.A.Hons. Degree in Fashion & Textiles – specialising in Surface Decoration.

She is originally from Nottingham and moved to Cornwall with her family in 2008. Louise loved drawing, designing, making and creating from a young age, always taking a sketchbook with her where ever she went and her love of design, pattern and colour is still a very important (& necessary!) part of her life.

Louise is really exited by patterns in nature – looking at the positive

and negative – the pattern within the picture and then exploring how the

'feel' and atmosphere of an image can change with varying use of colour and added texture.

Working from her studio in Cornwall she produces images from lino cuts that have been inspired by her everyday surroundings. The lino cuts are printed onto linen or cotton fabrics after which she uses fabric application and hand stitching to add detail and texture. The prints are then made into pictures and wall hangings or used on everyday items such as cushions, pouches and brooches.

Lino Printing & Embroidery

with Louise Nichols

Friday October 20th to Friday October 27th 2017 - FULL

During this workshop you will be designing, printing & embellishing lino prints on fabric to create unique pictures, wall hangings or other items for the home and self.

Day 1 Arrive today. Meet and greet supper with wine to get your creative juices flowing! Louise will display some samples and discuss how she made them.

Day 2 DESIGN & PHOTOGRAPHY
You will spend the first day of the workshop collecting together ideas for your designs. These can either be from nature, the local surroundings or any other images that inspire you. You will photograph, or sketch if you prefer, your inspiration and ideas. Louise will bring along some references and samples of her own work so you won't be short of ideas! You will then begin to adapt your ideas into designs that are suitable to be printed using lino.

Day 3 This morning is an outing to a local Vide Grenier to bargain hunt for fabulous French finds!

After lunch we will continue to refine our designs ready for carving into easy cut lino. (Gone are the days of hard lino!)

Day 4 LINO CUTTING & PRINTING

Today you will carve your designs out of lino and print onto fabric so by the end of the day you will have a selection of your lovely printed designs all ready for embellishing.

Day 5 EMBELLISHING

Today you will begin embellishing your designs with a selection of threads, yarns, felts, fabrics or whatever other decoration you choose.

Day 6 is an outing day to Aubusson, the famous tapestry making town. Whilst visiting the town, its galleries and museums we shall look for inspiration and discuss shape, colour & design ideas. We will also sketch and take photographs. The studio will be open on your return to continue working.

Day 7 FINISHING TECHNIQUES

Use today to finish all the embellishing and then you will make your designs up into the items of your choice.

The whole process is immensely enjoyable and it is really satisfying seeing your designs through from sketches or photographs to finished items.

Day 8 Today we will say our goodbyes and 'tie up any loose ends'. Most flights are later in the afternoon so the studio will be open for you to use all morning followed by lunch before you leave.
