Deborah
O'Hare

A brief biography

Deborah was introduced to quilting while living the life of an expat mum, in a place thousands of miles from where she is now.

On returning to the U.K. Deborah went looking for some classes so that she could continue with her new passion and jumped feet first into a City and Guilds in Patchwork and Quilting, closely followed by Machine Embroidery.

It was while completing a project for the Patchwork and Quilting course that she discovered the joys of fabric painting. Needing to have projects in which to use all these painted fabrics she started to design her own patterns and opened her Etsy shop called QuiltRoutes.

Her work reflects amongst other things the influence of the coastline and countryside of the Heritage Coast of South Wales where she now lives.

Deborah has been featured in the US Quilting Arts magazine and in Art Quilting Studio magazine. She gets invited to teach groups and guilds in the UK and abroad and exhibited her work at the Festival of Quilts this year.

Fabric! Paint! Stitch! with Deborah O'Hare

March 1st - March 8th 2019 - FULL

During this week’s course we are going to learn all about painting fabric for backgrounds through to making art quilts. Deborah will demonstrate and teach lots of different ways to help you become a more confident and creative textile artist.

Day 1

Arrive today. Meet and greet supper with wine to get your creative juices flowing! Deborah will display some sample quilts and discuss how she made them.

Day 2

LANDSCAPE FABRIC PAINTING
During your first day you will learn how to create fabrics to use in art and landscape quilts using permanent textile paints. Deborah will teach how to create special effect pieces of fabric, depicting skies, seas, rocks and trees. You will then paint a selection of fabric backgrounds to be used during the week.

Day 3

Today we will create and stitch MINI LANDSCAPES.
Use some of the fabric painted yesterday and create a small textile art piece. This class also looks at some alternative ways for finishing off and displaying your creations.

Day 4

MOON GAZING HARE QUILT or SELF DESIGNED ART QUILT

Applying the techniques learnt previously and painting fabric again today we will put together a pieced background to use as the base for creating own version of the Moon Gazing Hare quilt or a self-designed art/landscape quilt.

Day 5

MOON GAZING HARE QUILT or SELF DESIGNED ART QUILT

Today we will quilt our pieced background and add on the painted items on top of the quilting using freezer paper.

Day 6 is an outing day.

Day 7

THREAD PAINTING

Use today to continue working on your main project that was started on day 4. Demonstrations will include thread painting the main subject of your quilt and binding techniques.

Day 8

Today we will say our goodbyes and 'tie up any loose ends'. Most flights are later in the afternoon so the studio will be open for you to use all morning followed by lunch before you leave. If you have driven down you are free to leave anytime before 2pm.
